What does it cost for a portrait commission to be done for me or my family?

When I have considered this question with past art teachers they always discuss the fact that not many people do artwork. On top of that, not many paint portraits. Skin tones and the nuances between shades and colors are extremely difficult to master, or even attempt. Years of training and time delineates the students from the masters, while the true masters consistantly call themselves ‘the students.’

What factors into a painting?

Usually the individual interested in a painting wants to address certain things – like a favorite vacation spot by their family cabin, or they want their daughter in a rose garden, even sometimes a family pet. So each painting is specialized to their needs.

Some paintings are limited in what is intended – just a face painting, whereas others want a large portrait to be placed in a law office.

Once I have an idea of what is wanted, and what time will be expended, and what details will go into it I follow these guidelines:

Face(gallery level – not quick sketch, 16″x20″): 2,000

Face and Shoulders(24″x30″): 2,500

Custom Portrait from Head to Hands(24″x36′): 3,000

Full Body Portrait or individual (by stream or gardens, 30″x40″): 4,000

2 Individuals full body(by a stream or gardens, 30″x40″): 6,000

3 Individauls(custom stretch >30″x40″): 7,500

4th Individual(custom stretch >30″x40″) : 1000 added to last price.

5th Individual(custom stretch >30″x40″): 1000 added to last price.

6th Individual(custom stretch >30″x40″): 750 added to last price.

7th Individual(custom stretch >30″x40″): 500 added to last price.
