This was an interesting show, especially as far as composition is concerned. Just trying to think of location of shapes and form on such a small and square form was a challenge not to just place something in the ‘middle.’

Though this post is late, the Waterhouse Gallery Figurative Show 2011 was a fun experience. We got to rub shoulders with some of the best figurative artists, and some of the best up and coming artists. From Jeremy Lipking and Tony Pro, to Hsin-Yao Tseng. An excellent collection of works.

The above painting was done one evening when I attempted at painting a still-life by candlelight. I had a difficult time seeing the palette, due to the dim lightsource I had over the painting and palette, and actually had to memorize where some of the darker colors were. I first tried my hand at painting in the dark while on a Steelhead Fly Fishing trip to Idaho. It was a full moon and while at camp, that night, thought that I could make a night painting with my watercolor and white guache painting set. It worked. I captured the warm ring around the cool full moon, and the warm light reflecting off the cool waters of the Salmon River. I ended up painting a handful of night paintings on that trip. This trip gave me the itch to attemp the candle-light painting above.
